Visions of Aquelae: The Redstone Band
The Sword of Civilization, known chiefly for service to the Duke-errant from Cathicor for taming Ibavene
Radcleff, known as “The Sword of Civilization”, “Radcleff the Eternal”, and occasionally “Radcleff, King-maker”, was a legendary hero. He was the commander of a small army sent by the Duke-errant of Ibavene (later Ibavene’s first King) to secure the land beyond Ibavene’s shores. Later, serving the Grand Duke of Ibavene (the Duke-errant’s son), Radcleff was tasked with ferreting out and destroying pockets of dangerous creatures near the new kingdom. The expanding kingdom resulted in the Ibavene Goblin Wars, where General Radcleff, serving under the King of Ibavene (the Duke-errant’s grandson) led the offensive army in battle after bloody and glorious battle against the goblins. The war ended when Radcleff (so the legend goes) spent a week in meditation, gathering his strength, then marched alone into Ack-Uhl, the great goblin city-fortress, and reduced it to a flat hill. Legend diverges at this point. Some legends say that he was consumed in this act in a final blaze of fire and thunder that destroyed Ack-Uhl. Others claim he was taken by a powerful spirit to do the works of heaven (or repent for the destruction of balance). A very few claim he returned to the King of Ibavene and quit service, to retire and die peacefully. He is a powerful figure, especially in Ibavene legend, and makes an appearance in many tales and legends, often as a savior in an impossible situation or as a means to clear an obstacle blocking the colonization of men.
Gather round to hear the tale Of destruction of the Goblin rule When Eternal Radcliff's band prevailed And razed the Fortress of Ack-Uhl When Ibavene was young and wild The Goblins broke the people's will And conquered woman, man, and child The magic overpowered all skill Radcliff rose from across the sea The Sword of Civilization struck true He helped the masses, made them free And made his enemies Goblin Stew The mages failed to bring him down Exhausting every spell that be Immortal Radcliff freed the town Banishing Goblins into the sea Gather round to hear the tale Of destruction of the Goblin rule When Eternal Radcliff's band prevailed And razed the Fortress of Ack-Uhl
